MargDuffield(LeeRemick)istheMainewifeofAl(JosephSommer)whosedaughterPeg(MarleeMatlin)isdeaf.Peg'shusbandiskilledinacaraccidentonthewaytovisittheMainehouse,andtheDuffield'stakeinPeg'ssixyearolddaughter,Lisa,whilePegrecovers.SinceLisaisaspeakingchild,MargthinksofherthewayshewantedPegtobe,andseeksguardiancustody.
